BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE BANGLES: Live @ Cathay De Grande, Hollywood 7/31/83

BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE BANGLES: Live @ The Cathay De Grande, Hollywood CA 7/31/83

I found this very interesting early show of the Bangles recently on the Dime A Dozen boards and it does not disappoint on so many levels. Sharing a bill with Redd Kross (whose singer Jeffrey McDonald was dating Bangles guitarist Vicki Peterson at the time)and hardcore punks Black Flag (!)the show does a great job of representing the band in all their sloppy garage band glory at the height of their paisley underground notariety in Los Angeles. One gets the feeling that the band was trying to put a cap on the fame that their first single "Getting Out of Hand" brought them as they perform that song and the flipside "Call On Me" with special guest vocalists. The Three O'Clock's Michael Quercio does an admirable job on "Getting Out Of Hand" while Redd Kross' Jeffrey & Steven McDonald fare less well on "Call On Me", barely being able to remember the lyrics making the song into a quasi-instrumental with them only piping in for the chorus (this obviously was when the brothers were still in their getting fucked up phase that they thankfully soon grew out of).

Other highlights: An early rendition of the track "James" with Vicki Peterson on lead vocals (Susanna Hoffs would sing it on the recorded version for 'All Over The Place' a year later), a re-worked version of early Bangles track "Renaissance Man" (which was never recorded by the band), and a cover of the song "Find It", originally done by the band The Carrie Nations in Russ Meyers film 'Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls'. Also notable about the show is it being the first one done by bass player Michael Steele following the departure of original bassist Annette Zilinskas. I've kept the show in it's original FLAC lossless format, so the tracks from the show have been split into two RAR folders to download; only convert to mp3 for personal use, please do not re-share converted mp3 files to others as this will help prevent any degredation of sound quality over time. To check out a sampler of the show, check out the YouTube clips below in the playlist. Enjoy!

  1. Only sorry I missed these early shows. Did manage to catch them in DC, at the old 9:30, in 1984. I was one of the few members of the audience who seemed to want to watch the band rather than look at the band on the monitors.

    Thanks for posting this.

  8. What a nostalgic thrill to come across this on the internet! I saw every show the Bangles played for two solid years, and this particular show made a strong impression on my 17-year-old brain. Henry Rollins was the first seriously tattooed man I had ever seen, and the McDonald Brothers looked seven feet tall. The Bangles got everyone to sit down on the floor for "Renaissance Man". Bummed that the file is no longer accessible....

  14. Thanks for the mp3 for the whole show!!!

A lossless reup of part 1 alone would be cool, but I really appreciate the time and effort put into making all these live shows available.

    Thank you.

    And, again thank you.

  15. I was at this show! I was visiting in LA, and my friends said let's go! The next time I saw the Bangles was at Radio City Music Hall, never saw Black Flag again. I did meet D Boon of the Minutemen on that trip as well. Sad to learn he died a couple years later. It was a fun trip for a girl from NJ!

  16. Hi everybody,
Thanks a lot for this so good and interesting upload! I love the atmosphere, intimate & fun that we could feel listening to it.
I saw them on stage one time only when they came in Paris (France) on February 25th 1986. They played in a little theatre called in the past Eldorado (994 seats, called now Comedia Theatre) I was 14 years old and it was a GREAT, INTENSE & MEMORABLE moment…. They really burn the place! ;)
Now, I am sorry to confirm that the first part link is invalid/dead.
Perhaps you – one anyone else - could be so kind to re-upload it, so we could enjoy the first part of the show.
    Thanking you in advance,
    Take Care,
    Zombie
