JANE WIEDLIN: The Acoustic Album Sessions

JANE WIEDLIN The Acoustic Album Sessions

The first eight tracks here are from the so-called 'Acoustic Album' by Jane Wiedlin, songs that were recorded for reasons unknown by the Go-Go songwriter/guitarist sometime in the early nineties. It's possible that they were recorded during the same sessions that yielded her acoustic rendition of "Our Lips Are Sealed" that appeared on her 1993 retrospective "From Cool Places to Worlds On Fire: The Very Best Of Jane Wiedlin", however the origins of the recordings for now remain unknown.

Along with the eight mysterious 'acoustic album' tracks, i've added in some other 'acoustic' or 'stripped' down versions of songs by Jane herself solo, her mid-nineties band froSTed or with the Go-Go's. See below for tracks and notes on each (To sample some of the songs in the collection, check out the YouTube playlist directly below.).

Tracks 1-8: From the so-called "Acoustic Album" of solo and Go-Go's songs that Jane recorded in the early 1990's. Details are few but these may be outtakes from the session that resulted in her acoustic rendition of "Our Lips Are Sealed" which she included on her 1992 compilation album "From Cool Places To Worlds On Fire: The Very Best Of Jane Wiedlin".

Track 9 is from the 1992 compilation album "From Cool Places To Worlds On Fire: The Very Best Of Jane Wiedlin". This acoustic rendition was recorded especially for the retrospective and was produced by Robin Hild.

Track 10: Acoustic version of the froSTed song "Call Me Crazy" which appeared as a b-side on the single edition of "Call Me Crazy" in 1996, as well as being included as a bonus track on the digital download re-release of the froSTed album 'Cold' in 2009. froSTed was a pop-punk band fronted by Wiedlin from 1995-1997.

Track 11: Acoustic rendition of the froSTed song done by Jane Wiedlin live at an in-store apearance/performance at Borders Books and Music in Los Angeles in 2000. froSTed was a pop-punk band fronted by Wiedlin from 1995-1997. "My Boyfriend" originally appeared on the one and only froSTed album 'Cold' (DGC Records, 1996).

Track 12: Recorded live at an in-store appearance at Border Books and Music in Los Angeles in 2000. "Icicle" was the first radio single released from Jane's fourth solo album "Kissproof World" (Painful Discs, 2000).

Track 13: Performed by the Go-Go's. Recorded live for 96.5 FM's 'Acoustic Cafe' program in 1994 - previously unreleased.

Track 14: Performed by the Go-Go's. Recorded live for the Howard Stern Show in 1994 - previously released as a b-side on the cassette version of the Go-Go's single "Good Girl" (I.R.S. Records, 1995).

Track 15: Performed by the Go-Go's. Recorded live at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles in December of 1990. Previously released on the double CD retrospective 'Return To The Valley Of The Go-Go's' (I.R.S. Records, 1994). Original version of the song appears on the Go-Go's album 'Talk Show' (I.R.S. Records, 1984).

Track 16: Performed by the Go-Go's. Recorded live in Las Vegas in 2004 or 2005 (exact date unknown).

Tracks 17-18: Performed by the Go-Go's. Recorded live for 'The Star Lounge' on 98.7 FM Los Angeles in 2006. Original versions from the Go-Go's album 'Beauty And The Beat' (I.R.S. Records, 1981).

Track 19: Acoustic version of the title track for Jane's third solo album 'Tangled' (EMI-Manhattan Records, 1990), that also appeared on the 'Pretty Woman' soundtrack of that year as well. This version was released as a b-side on the 'World On Fire' CD maxi single (known as the 'Matchbook' single since the sleeve is a mock cardboard matchbook, including real striking surface and the disc is housed in a slip-sleeve that has a graphic print of matches.) Produced by Gary Hellman.

Track 20: Recorded on the set of the 2009 film 'STUCK!' as Jane sang the song to the cast and crew during a break. (Song cuts in slightly at the beginning.)

Track 21: Acoustic version recorded for the compilation album '80's Hits Stripped' (Sidewinder Records, 2006).

BANGLES: Live in Berlin 2003

BANGLES: Live in Berlin 2003

Great sounding (A+) show from the 2003 'Doll Revolution' world tour, this one was recorded live at Kleine Columbia-Halle in Berlin, Germany on April 8, 2003 for a German FM radio broadcast. Contains rare performances of the singles "Something That You Said" and "Tear Off Your Own Head" as well as great renditions of "Hazy Shade", "If She Knew..." and most of the other big hits (only complaint being that they left out "In Your Room". Sigh.).

I've kept the show in it's original FLAC lossless format, so the tracks from the show have been split into two RAR folders to download; only convert to mp3 for personal use, please do not re-share converted mp3 files to others as this will help prevent any degredation of sound quality over time. To check out samples of the show, check out the YouTube clips below in the playlist. Enjoy!

UPDATE 3/27/10: Due to a problem with one of the files in the second RAR which has now been corrected, i've had to split the second RAR into two, making for a total of three RAR's to download for this show. The information below has been corrected.

UPDATE 10/29/10:  Uploaded a new part 3 and double-checked it (link has been updated) - hopefully that will fix any previous problems we've had with corrupt files, or download problems.  And if not, then it's obvious that the universe doesn't want you to hear Eternal Flame ever again. :-)

DOWNLOAD: The Bees Knees: Voice Of The Bee-sides v3

Here's the third, and final, volume of rare tracks from 80s pop group Voice Of The Beehive. Covering the rest of the bands recorded output including demos, live tracks and remixes, it serves as an excellent supplement to any Beehive collection. The first twelve tracks were previously released on the album 'Bee-sides', which was self-released by the band and sold exclusively via their website and at live shows in 2003, and is no longer available. Of these twelve tracks, the first four are never before heard songs that rank up their amongst the best the band ever recorded; it's a shame that the band disintegrated before ever being able to fully realize these. See below for a tracklisting at a glance, a video player where you can sample any of the tracks in question and below that more detailed notes about each one. For my post about the first volume, which covers the years 1987-1989 click here, and the second volume, covering the rest of the bands recordings 1991-1996, click here.

BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE BANGLES: Live @ Cathay De Grande, Hollywood 7/31/83

BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE BANGLES: Live @ The Cathay De Grande, Hollywood CA 7/31/83

I found this very interesting early show of the Bangles recently on the Dime A Dozen boards and it does not disappoint on so many levels. Sharing a bill with Redd Kross (whose singer Jeffrey McDonald was dating Bangles guitarist Vicki Peterson at the time)and hardcore punks Black Flag (!)the show does a great job of representing the band in all their sloppy garage band glory at the height of their paisley underground notariety in Los Angeles. One gets the feeling that the band was trying to put a cap on the fame that their first single "Getting Out of Hand" brought them as they perform that song and the flipside "Call On Me" with special guest vocalists. The Three O'Clock's Michael Quercio does an admirable job on "Getting Out Of Hand" while Redd Kross' Jeffrey & Steven McDonald fare less well on "Call On Me", barely being able to remember the lyrics making the song into a quasi-instrumental with them only piping in for the chorus (this obviously was when the brothers were still in their getting fucked up phase that they thankfully soon grew out of).

Other highlights: An early rendition of the track "James" with Vicki Peterson on lead vocals (Susanna Hoffs would sing it on the recorded version for 'All Over The Place' a year later), a re-worked version of early Bangles track "Renaissance Man" (which was never recorded by the band), and a cover of the song "Find It", originally done by the band The Carrie Nations in Russ Meyers film 'Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls'. Also notable about the show is it being the first one done by bass player Michael Steele following the departure of original bassist Annette Zilinskas. I've kept the show in it's original FLAC lossless format, so the tracks from the show have been split into two RAR folders to download; only convert to mp3 for personal use, please do not re-share converted mp3 files to others as this will help prevent any degredation of sound quality over time. OtherStarPeople:
Jennifer "Precious" Finch - Vocals, Guitar
Xander Smith - Vocals, Guitar
Todd Phillips - Drums
Junko Ito - Bass, 4-3-2-1 vocals

OtherStarPeople was a short-lived L.A. based guitar pop band active from the years 1997-2003.

Founded by Jennifer Finch, the former bass player for all-female metal-grunge band L7 in 1997, the band was a far cry from what many anticipated to come next from the L.A. punk rock scene veteran. Embracing the nickname “Precious”, switching to guitar and sharing lead vocals with suave, charismatic (and male!) guitarist Xander Smith, Finch confounded expectations by leading a band that mixed elements of punk, alt-rock, pop and new wave. A milion miles away from the femme-grunge sound of Finch’s former band, OSP spotlighted more of Finch’s nuanced songwriting/crafting talents that had been hidden within the belly of the wail of L7, while still featuring her heavy rock chops front and center. To round out the band, Finch and Smith recruited Todd Phillips on drums (formerly of The Juliana Hatfield Three) and later, neophyte Japanese bass-player Junko Ito.

Keeping a low-profile initially in order to avoid being snapped up by Slash Records (L7’s label, which legally had first right of picking up the band under a leaving member clause in Finch’s contract), the band held out and after successfully evading that contractual mess, the band signed a high-profile deal with A&M Records in 1998. The band quickly went into the studio with 70’s superstar producer Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, Journey, Foreigner) to record “Diamonds In The Belly Of The Dog”, just prior to the music industry imploding with the gigantic Universal/Polygram merger that basically closed down A&M Records (for all intents and puposes) for good. Surprisingly, their debut album was one of the few that survived the transition and earned an August 1999 release date during a time when most well-known Universal/Polygram artists were still trying to figure out whether they had a deal or not.

Sadly, probably due to Universal/Polygram still figuring out their internal marketing division, the record didn’t find the audience it deserved and after only one record, the band and A&M/Universal parted ways, with the group disbanding not much later in 2002. “Precious” went on to perform with Betty Blowtorch and formed the band The Shocker in 2003. She has also concentrated on her photography and in 1996 had a L.A. Weekly sponsored art show of her work called “14 and Shooting” on display at the Aidan Ryley Taylor Gallery in Hollywood.

Gotta love a band that asks you if you've seen Mike Hunt.

Here's the video for Harlow's "Still Haunting" from the debut album 'Harlowland', self-released by the band in 2001. Directed by Amy Chance.

Harlow (the band) was an all female rock group from L.A. who gained fame primarily through their appearance on the 2001 reality cable show "Bands On The Run" where they competed against several other bands touring across America for a shot at a record deal and video shoot. While the band didn't win the contest (the prize went to the band Flickerstick instead), the show gave them a sizable following, and soon record labels were eager to sign Harlow to a deal. Ultimately, the band decided against signing a major label deal and instead self-released their debut album 'Harlowland' (produced by Germs/Foo Fighter member Pat Smear) in late 2001.

YOUTUBE: Go-Go's "Head Over Heels" (Promo Video - Alternate Cut)

I know, I know, I know - there are a million copies of the "Head Over Heels" music video currently in circulation on YouTube, but I had to upload this one simply for it's unique nature. The differences are very slight and subtle, but this appears to be an alternate "promotional" cut of the original video for HOH. Bonus points for anyone who points out some of the differences between the two...

YOUTUBE: Go-Go's Interviewed by Moon Zappa on VH1's Darcy's Music (1994)

Go-Go's - Darcy's Music Interview with Moon Zappa 1994

Rumor has it that the Go-Go's 1994 reunion to support their double CD retrospective 'Return To The Valley Of The Go-Go's' was anything but a happy experience, and in this interview from late 1994 for 'Darcy's Music' (VH1's 'Adult Alternative' program at the time) we can definitely see the tension between the band members show.

'Darcy's Music' host Moon 'Unit' Zappa (best known for scoring a Top 40 hit with her father Frank Zappa on the song "Valley Girl" in the early 80's) does her best to impart some enthusiasm upon the four Go-Go's present (Kathy Valentine, Gina Schock, Jane Wiedlin and Belinda Carlisle - guitarist Charlotte Caffey was absent due to pregnancy), but all we really get are a couple of forced laughs, responses that sound somewhat insincere and the collective feeling that the four couldn't stand to be around each other.

Despite their comments about how the band was in it for the long haul, the band would finish the promotional duties for this project and once again go their separate ways. Talks of a new album in 1995 stalled due to internal band strife, and shortly thereafter Gina Schock sued guitarist Charlotte Caffey for unpaid songwriting royalties for the song "Beautiful", putting the kabosh on any future Go-Go's project (or so it seemed.)

By 1999 however, the 'schocking litigation' had been resolved and the band announced 'another' reunion - this time as a series of summer tour dates, which they would repeat in 2000 co-headlining with the B-52's. That blossomed into the first Go-Go's album in 15 years 'God Bless The Go-Go's' in 2001, and since then the band has been loosely 'together' performing at least a handful of dates each year. [Note: one might conjecture that the Schock settlement and subsequent annual reunion might be more directly related: allegedly Schock was the only band member gung ho about continuing as the Go-Go's following the 1994 tour, and the litigation was probably partly the result of bitterness at her former bandmates and also out of financial necessity, as she was without any other form of income at the time. It seems that by all five Go-Go's agreeing to perform at least a handful of dates each year, they would insure at least a modest income for each Go-Go annually, a increasingly more important matter as time goes by and the royalties start coming less frequently and side projects are less successful.]

However, in 2010 Belinda Carlisle announced that the upcoming summer tour would be billed as the 'Farewell Tour' and that this would be the last time to see the band. All good things must come to an end, I suppose.

Thank god Gina is getting lots of songwriting royalties from co-writing songs by Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez these days!
